Assess a project at milestones, not just at the end

For each give a small deliverable, evidence criteria, feedback question and recovery route if the work stalls. Provide a compact rubric that rewards reasoning and iteration rather than expensive materials. Do not assume home resources or group availability. Check that each milestone reveals progress toward the final outcome and that feedback arrives before a decision becomes irreversible.
